Narges Mohammadi, Nobel Pricze Winner of 2023

The Norwegian Nobel Committee has awarded the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize to Iranian human rights activist Narges Mohammadi for “her courageous and unwavering fight for human rights, especially women’s rights and freedom of expression, in Iran.”

Mohammadi is the vice president of the Defenders of Human Rights Center (DHRC), a Nobel Peace Prize-winning organization that advocates for human rights in Iran. She has been imprisoned on multiple occasions for her work, including for campaigning against the death penalty and for gathering and colluding against national security.

In 2020, Mohammadi was released from prison on medical furlough, after being diagnosed with heart problems. However, she was rearrested in 2021 and returned to prison.

Despite the risks and challenges she has faced, Mohammadi has continued to fight for human rights in Iran. She is an inspiration to people around the world who are struggling for democracy and freedom.

In its announcement, the Norwegian Nobel Committee said that Mohammadi’s work is “a powerful reminder that even in the darkest of times, there is always hope for a better future.”

The award is a recognition of Mohammadi’s courage and determination in the face of adversity, and it is a message of support to all those who are fighting for human rights in Iran.
